Porcelain with fine enamel painting China, “in the summer month of the year wuzi”, which is 1948 Painted round the sides with a continuous riverscape with trees and misty peaks in the background, incorporating rustic dwellings, several figures in boats on a lake, signed Zhang Zhitang with one seal reading Zhitang, the countersunk base with one seal Yitao Zhai (Yitao Studio), the inscription reading “the light boat hovers above the lake, the scented path leads to the dwelling in the mountain”. Zhang Zhitang (1893-1971) began learning to paint on porcelain when he was just eight years old. He was most productive between the years of 1937 - 1944 when he mostly painted landscapes on porcelain plaques. In his early years he was influenced by Song and Yuan landscape painting. After 1945, he held posts as an instructor at the Jiangxi Provincial Pottery College and the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute. His studio name was Yitao Zhai.
