Jadeite in russet, celadon and green hues, good polish. Original rosewood base. China, around 1900 This well-carved lotus leaf shape brush washer shows an appealing color play of russet and various shades of green in the jadeite material. One of the most popular auspicious Chinese animals, the three-legged toad, is portrayed in high relief sitting inside the leaf and serves well as a brush rest. The piece comes with its original rosewood base, again shaped as a lotus leaf and supported by a reticulated foot rim.
