Antwerpian school, attributed to Peter Van den Vel…Port sceneOil on canvas. A painter of marine landscapes, Peter Van den Velde (1634-c. 1707) became a freemason with the Guild of Saint-Luc in Antwerp in 1654. His work testifies stylistically to the influence of J. Peeters, but is differentiated by weaker drawing and a more vigorous hand. His preferred tones are brown and grey, and his favourite themes are shipwrecks, stormy seas with fantastical rocky coasts, and water sports with a city view in the distance. 43.5 x 62.5 cm In a giltwood frame.
