吴大澂癖嗜古文奇字，尤精鉴别，凡属商周彝器无论原器或拓本，搜求不遗余力，又集得同时金石家陈介祺、王懿荣、沈树镛藏拓，皆一一手自释文，集成巨帙，编为二十八卷，卷首均系以子目，凡一千一百四十四器，每器必自书隶书作标题，名曰愙斋集古录，并以隶书自叙卷首，拟付石印，公诸同好，事未竟而愙斋归道山。民国五年（1916），其子吴本善奉遗稿请王同愈整理成书，后著作权归商务印书馆印行。次年秋书印成，又请罗振玉作序。吴大澂多有考释文字，考订极精，为研究商周青铜器的重要典籍。
