吴湖帆是才艺双馨的世家子弟，而周炼霞则是以词画名世的民国名媛，二人书画交游，诗词唱和，共同演绎了海上画坛的一段风流佳话。此扇面集吴湖帆与周炼霞两家妙笔于一图之中，缜密秀丽，清隽雅逸。不但画技精湛，也见证了二人之间一段深厚的丹青情谊。吴湖帆善用颜色和白粉没骨点染花卉。少许色彩，笔下花卉便风神特别，卓卓可观，如从风露中折来，风娇雨秀。此画吴湖帆以其独创的“吴装荷花”点染出一片荷叶田田，连蒂并开之境，色粉相撞相融，美轮美奂，天趣横生，“冰绡凝粉，晓烟织雾，池塘遶遍清香”，充满着婉约的词意。周炼霞以工笔精绘一对鸳鸯，一敷色五彩，明丽丰腴，一闭目回首，怡然自得，在沁香满盈的荷塘中相依相偎。整幅作品静穆、轻灵，画风和诗风气息相通，实为吴湖帆荷花与周炼霞鸳鸯的完美合璧。
