是书以法国人葛兰德雕造的“华文叠积字”排印出版。叠积活字，即葛氏在汉学家波赛尔的建议和指导下，将汉字的形旁、声旁分开雕刻铸造之字模，使用时拼合即可。内收众多物理学示意图，皆为雕版印制。叠积字与雕版同现一书，甚为独特，是清季中西出版工艺交融的产物。
