Papua, Barat, Asmat, war shield, yamasj,the upper part of the design shows a anthropomorphic or zoomorphic figure, the body parts connected by circulair motives and with a central motive of a rare zoomorph figure with an anthropomorphic head. The design in red and black on a white ground. Provenance Ernst Heinrich, Stuttgart, Bad Kannstatt, Germany, aquired before 1940 and Loed and Mia van Bussel, Amsterdam. For a shield with the same characteristic design of the stylized flying foxes and the use of an anthropomorphic figure in the middle, see 'Ozianische Kunst, Meiserwerke aus dem Museum for Volkerkunde', Basel, 1980, number 7. This shield was collected by Paul Wirtz in 1922 near the Eilanden River. Inv. No. Basel Vb 6263.
