此砚洮河石雕就，色如绿漪，冰清质洁。砚体作蝉形，蝉目及颈部深挖以作墨池，蝉背浅挖以作墨堂，砚背起两圆足，造型极简，古风盎然，是为宋代蝉形砚之模仿和延续。南宋赵希鹄赞洮河砚曰：“除端歙二石外，唯洮河绿石北方最为贵重，绿如兰、润如玉、发墨不减端溪下岩，然石在临洮大河深水之底，非人力所致，得之为无价之宝，耆旧相传，虽知有洮砚，然目所未睹。”明高濂在其《燕闲清赏笺》书中评价洮河砚：“此洮河绿石砚也，光细如玉，无少差异，惟不及玉之坚耳，色如新绿，葱翠可爱，以之方碧，碧深而沉，以之方荼，淡而不艳，真砚中宝也。”
