端溪老坑，质地坚润细腻，砚体厚重。砚呈瓜形，其形制圆厚，砚首雕琢瓜叶，叶脉清晰，翻卷舒展围出墨池。有生动传神的瓜蒂和瓜脐，琢刻小瓜、瓜叶和瓜蔓，层层叠叠，雍容华贵，刀法精细，线条流畅。砚背平整，瓜瓞绵绵句出《诗·大雅·绵》：“绵绵瓜瓞，民之初生，自土沮漆。”取义瓜始生时常小，但其蔓不绝，会逐渐长大，绵延滋生。寓意子孙昌盛，兴旺发达，是清代常见的传统纹饰。
