紫檀为生长期缓慢的树木种类之一，其芯材坚硬，适合雕刻，清中期曾大量购买紫檀木材，用于制作宫室一应家具器用，可见其珍贵。此花插为紫檀一木整挖而成，呈上大下小的匜形，内部随形掏膛，外部利用了树木根部的天然形态，将瘿结、纹理融入造型中，其状苍古，稍作雕琢却宛自天开，曰“随形”或“天然形”。紫檀木质细腻，发色沉稳、内敛，包浆厚重。天然造型的器具审美较为复杂，取其天然而无造作痕迹，又须兼得形质之美，陈设于案头，增古雅之韵。同类器型可参阅王世襄《自珍集》，生活·读书·新知三联书店，230页，王世襄先生旧藏明紫檀天然形笔筒，出自同仁堂乐家。
