TATSUZO SHIMAOKA (1919-2007) A slip-decorated circular stoneware dish, decorated with a pattern reminiscent of a snail's spiraling shell. Dia: 12 3/8 in. PROVENANCE: Property from The Goldman Family Collection, San Francisco Bay Area, California; Acquired directly from the artist, 1959 NOTE: Tatsuzo Shimaoka, designated a Japanese Living National Treasure in 1996, was reknowned for his Mingei-style ceramics, inspired by the anonymous "folk" and archaic wares of Japan. He apprenticed under the master potter Shoji Hamada in the late 1940s.
