PROVENANCE: Property from The Goldman Family Collection, San Francisco Bay Area, California; Acquired directly from the artist, 1959 NOTE: Tatsuzo Shimaoka, designated a Japanese Living National Treasure in 1996, was reknowned for his Mingei-style ceramics, inspired by the anonymous "folk" and archaic wares of Japan. He apprenticed under the master potter Shoji Hamada in the late 1940s.
