NINO BERTOLETTIRome, 1889 - 1971 The bride, 1941 Oil on board, 64 x 50 cm Photo-certificiate on the back by the daughter of the painterBIOGRAPHY: He started painting very young and devoted himself to painting as soon as he finished his studies, with a more personal than academic training. He made his debut in 1909 at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Rimini. In 1911 in Rome he exhibited at the Cinquantenaire Exhibition. Take part in the 1st Exhibition of the Roman Secession. Around 1913 he took up his studio in Villa Strohl-fern, where he remained for about three years. After the war he exhibited at the II Roman Biennale (1923), proving to be sensitive to the climate of the "return to order", in a neoclassical declination. He participates in the 1st Italian Twentieth Century Exhibition (1926). Endowed with a vast culture and led to an aristocratic "amateurism", he became friends with Cecchi, Pirandello, de Chirico, to whom he dedicated a portrait in 1924. A shy spirit and free from controversy, he prefers to work in isolation; his participation in exhibitions is therefore limited. In 1927 at the XCII Exhibition of Amateurs and Cultors he exhibited in the group of "Ten artists of the Italian twentieth century" presented by Margherita Sarfatti; participates in the trade unions and the Venice Biennials; it has a personal room at the II Quadriennale (1935) and is present at the exhibitions of the Amatori and Cultori (1927 and '30) and at the Venice Biennials. In his self-presentation at the II Quadrennial he reaffirms his fidelity to the natural datum and the extraneousness to fashions and cultural programs, in Italy and abroad. Some of the protagonists of Roman artistic life (de Chirico, Guttuso, Levi, de Libero) will leave an affectionate testimony of his personality on the occasion of the retrospective set up at the Ente Premi Roma in 1974.BIBLIOGRAPHY: J.
