Description
Translation provided by Youdao
Venetian School, 18 th century, successor of Paolo Veronese (1528–1588). The Queen of Sheba appears before King Solomon in Jerusalem, accompanied by ladies-in-waiting and pages. She had heard of his great wisdom and wanted to see it for herself. Overwhelmed by the wisdom of Solomon, she gives him great riches; he reciprocates with gifts to her. (1 Kings 10: 1–13; 2 Chronicles, 9, 1–12.) The ladies-in-waiting raise their coats and a page lays a pillow so that the queen can kneel in front of Solomon to greet them. Solomon with a turban on his head, enthroned on the left under a red curtain, surrounded by his advisors. In the background, the courtyard of the palace extends with tall trees behind the walls. The architecture corresponds to the late 16th or early 17th century.Composition, color, and architecture go back to the model of the painting of the Venetian Paolo Veronese. The figure of the Queen of Sheba, her face and that of her ladies-in-waiting as well as the figure of Solomon are detailed, the other figures and the background are painted more sketchily with a brisk hand. The painting can be a study for a painting of a larger format."
