Bartolomeo Nazzari (1693-1758) circle, Portrait of Francesco Morosini, c.1750. The half-length painting shows Francesco Morosini (1618-1694, Doge from 1688) as a Captain-General of the Sea at war. In this position, he was at the age of seventy with the Venetian fleet off Aegina, when he was elected Doge. The sea battle on the right in the picture indicates this. As Captain-General, he had previously achieved numerous successes in the fight against the Ottomans, and in 1685 conquered Morea (Peloponnese). In 1687, with a cannon shot, he destroyed the Parthenon in Athens, which was then used as a powder magazine. However, the painting dates from the 18th century to the circle of the painter Bartolomeo Nazzari. A full-length version of the portrait is in the Correr Museum, Venice. Portraits of these doge are rare. It is therefore an important historical document. But also artistically the capturing of the personality is impressive. Oil on canvas 111,5 x 92 cm
