CONTACT US Clarence Underwood (New York, 1871 - 1929) Born in Jamestown, New York, Underwood studied at the Art Students League and the Academy of Julian in Paris with J. P. Laurens, Constant and Bouguereau, in 1896. Returned around 1901/02 to work illustrating postcards, books, and magazines, including the Saturday Evening Post. Many of his paintings were romantically influenced, showing courting scenes from over the fence line to stealing a kiss over a chessboard. Underwood create images for magazines Saturday Evening Post, Ladies’ World magazine and others, as well as works by many literary works. Artist illustrated more than 40 Post covers between 1903 and 1926. Many showed active women fishing, playing tennis, canoeing, even plowing a field. Underwood was a member of the Society of Illustrators in New York City in 1910 and was on staff of the New York Press.
