Philip Mercier was born in Berlin, the son of a Huguenot tapestry worker who came to London in 1716 at the recommendation of the Court of Hanover. Between 1720 and 1727, he was recorded as living at No.40 Leicester Square. His early successes in London were of Watteau inspired fêtes galantes with the tradition of Dutch 17th century portraiture.
