款识：寿者。 钤印：潘天寿印、阿寿 释文：画，须有笔外之笔，墨外之墨，意外之意，即臻上乘禅矣。潘天寿的用笔，取南宋水墨苍劲和浙派的健拔，而去其率直颓放、单薄燥硬；得书法用笔的“留”“缩”“凝重”，而无文人画末流的庸弱琐碎，故大刀阔斧，沉着畅快，用笔“刚而和”，是刚健清新的模范。而“画，须有笔外之笔，墨外之墨，意外之意，即臻上乘禅矣。”则对笔墨提出了更高的要求，笔墨之外有情致、有趣味、有旨意，更要有境界、气象、格调，体现出画家的品性修为。
