Korea, possibly late 18th/early 19th century, depicting General Guo Ziyi's birthday banquet held in his walled mansion with multiple buildings and pavilions, surrounded with auspicious flora and fauna, against a landscape with a waterfall in the distance, the general seated under an outdoor tent in the center with his sons and grandsons watching a female dancer and musicians, overall ht. 81 3/4, wd. 116 1/4, painting ht. 73 1/2 in.
Provenance: Purchased by William B. Van Nortwick (1911-1988) from Samuel W. Lee & Company during his stay in Korea in 1951-52; Sold in 1992 with his residence in New York to the present owner by the Estate of William Van Nortwick. According to the original description provided by Samuel W. Lee to Van Nortwick, the screen was given by King Jeongjo (r. 1776-1800) of Joseon Korea to the grandfather of the original owner whom Lee identified as Song Sung Chin.
