Pocket watch/form watch: museum rarity, exceptionally large heart-shaped verge watch with matching chatelaine 'Paillon', Gaston Jolly Paris No.164, ca. 1780: Ca. 46 x 65mm, ca. 52g, 18K gold, case number 7140, heart shape, rim and pendant with paillon enamel with gold inlays, middle part with round enamel plaque with painting, rim with leaf decoration, signed and numbered verge movement, enamel dial, pink gold hands, intact, enamel with small old restorations. The watch comes with the exceptionally rare gold chatelaine, as well as the watch also dark blue enamelled with paillon inlays in gold and green, middle part with painting, chatelaine exceptionally well preserved, including the 4 original pendants, also enamelled on both sides and with paillon inlays, with the matching original key and a signet. Heart-shaped watches are rarities among enamel watches, and we know of no other examples with matching chatelain. The most famous manufacturers of these heart-shaped watches were James Cox in London and Piguet & Meylan in Geneva. Today, these pieces are traded at collector's prices, some of them in the high 6-digit range! Gaston Jolly was not actually his real name, officially it was François-Pierre Jolly, call name Gaston. In archives one also finds François-Pierre-Gaston Jolly. Gaston became a master watchmaker on 6 May 1784. He was located in the Rue des Arcis (1784), later in the Rue Michel le Compte, which was renamed Rue Michel le Pelletier. From time to time, one also finds the signature as Gaston Joly. Jolly used watch cases from Robert and Jean-Baptist Osmond. When his son joined or took over the business, the watches were no longer signed Gaston Jolly, but Gaston Jolly Fils à Paris.
