Pocket watch/chatelaine: important museum gold/agate verge watch with gemstone setting, made for the Chinese or Russian market, provenance 'Property of Sir A. Chester Beatty', George Grantham No.7561, ca. 1750: Ca. Ø43.5mm, ca. 80g, agate and high-carat gold Rococo case, finest repoussé work, back with representation of a pavilion with fountain and palm tree, set with rubies, emeralds and diamonds, opening button also set with a diamond, enamel dial, original hands set with diamonds, with original gold chatelaine, ca. 12cm long, matching stone setting, also extremely precious set with diamonds, emeralds and rubies, exceptional museum piece in very beautiful condition, intact, cleaning recommended. These precious pieces were made in England for the Russian as well as the Chinese market and were mostly ordered by the respective rulers. Comparable pieces can be found in the famous collections in Russia. A very similar piece is in the Louvre. Provenance: The famous collection of Sir A. Chester Beatty, auctioned at Sotheby's in London in 1963. The watch is accompanied by a copy of the catalogue of the time (excerpt).
