The Adoration of the Magi, created by a Flemish master around 1520, is probably one of two side wings of a triptych presumably intended for private devotion. The harmonious, self-contained composition of the Madonna with Child and the Magi in front of a partly dilapidated stable architecture makes it difficult to assign it to the former central panel, but it appears probable to have been the left wing. While the Madonna holding the Child Christ on Her lap is dressed in a comparatively simple blue robe with subtle gold-embroidered hems standing out, the three Magi are shown in extraordinarily splendid robes decorated with precious stones. Equally richly designed are the monstrance-like gold vessels in which they present their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Dimensions 67 x 30 cm Artist or Maker Flemish School around 1520/1530 Medium Oil on wood Provenance Ancient private collection, Belgium Notes VAT: Margin scheme
