‘Laugh Now But One Day We´ll Be In Charge’ (2001). Aerosol Spray Paint and Test Stencil Proof on Heavy Paper. (Unique, Includes letter from EMI executive and specific PCO mail). Estimate on request. DESCRIPTION: Extremely rare and unique draft version of ‘Laugh Now But One Day We´ll Be In Charge’. This is the very first impression made of this iconic image and is believed to be the only remaining ‘Monkey’ proof in existence in this size. It was stencilled onto an old music poster as a test image, prior to the stencil being spray painted in a public place. It features in the NETFLIX movie "How to sell a Banksy”, where it is seen at Bankrobber London's Exhibition 'Laugh Now’, where it was the highlight. Another example of the stencil can be seen on Banksy's website. We have spoken to Jo Hillier and shown the piece to the artist (=Banksy). As Jo Hillier previously confirmed this is by the artist, however they were done as test stencils. They are old posters that were used as testing surfaces and were not made as works of art. They were never authorised to be sold as such. A Pest Control Certificate of Authentication, that provides a piece with authentication for sale as a work of art by Banksy, cannot be issued for the piece that you have. NOTE: - Email from Jo Hillier to Daron (24 January 2005). “..As I said I am more than happy to vouch for the authenticity of the Banksy image you showed me. In 2001 I used to share an office with Banksy… he did some design work for my label We Love You (an offshoot of wall of sound)in exchange for free studio space All down one side of the unit we shared was a wall of industrial shelving that held old promotional material such as posters Banksy regularly used old posters for testing stencils The poster you showed me the other day was definitely one of these “tests” All the best Jo
