17th century English School, oil on canvas, Portrait of Sir Thomas Craig of Riccarton 1538-1608, holding a scroll, titled, 60.5 x 74cm, in period carved gilt frame. NB:Sir Thomas Craig of Riccarton (c. 1538-1608) was a notable Scottish jurist and poet. In 1564, he was appointed jtice-depute. In this capacity he presided at many of the criminal trials of the period in Edinburgh. He was well known for his poetry and his 1603 ‘J Feudale’. This book was the firstprehensive legal treatise to be written in Scotland and its object was to assimilate the laws of England and Scotland, but, instead of this, it was an important factor in building up and solidifying the law of Scotland into a separate system.Provenance: Removed from The Garden Hoe, Hampstead
