A GOLD-FLECKED BLACK GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, 1700-1770

Provenance: From a UK private collection, acquired from Robert Kleiner & Co. Ltd., London. A copy of the original invoice, dated 20 November 2000 and describing the piece as ‘A glass Snuff Bottle, of ovoid shape, the black ground suffused with minute gold speckles, attributed to Beijing, 1700-1770’, accompanies this lot. Robert Kleiner (1948-2014) was an important expert on and dealer of Chinese snuff bottles, beginning his long career at Sotheby’s Chinese Art department in London. Along with Hugh Moss and Bob Hall, Robert Kleiner became a key advisor to the Mary and George Bloch collection, and it was Robert who wrote and produced the very first catalog of their bottles.
Condition: Very good condition with little wear, some manufacturing irregularities such as open bubbles.
Stopper: Green glass bead and a stepped metal mounting, carved spoon
Weight: 69 g
Dimensions: Height including stopper 60 mm. Diameter neck 12 mm and mouth 7 mm.
This type of glass, suffused with gold speckles, is recorded as early as 1703, when the Kangxi Emperor gave two such bottles to courtiers. Glass bottles of this period were almost certainly made within the Imperial Glassworks set up in 1696 by the Jesuits under Kilian Stumpf, to cater to the Imperial fascination with glass, which continued throughout the 18th century.
The technique of introducing gold splashes into glass was invented by the glass makers of Murano. This involved dissolving a silicate of cuprous oxide into the molten glass matrix, which converts on cooling to a partly metallic state.
