signed JIYOU, inscribed, and with four seals of the artist ink and color on paper, hanging scroll Liu Jiyou was a Chinese painter who combined the elegant calligraphic style of Eastern art with elements of Western painting. His work is characterized by the dynamism and energy with which he depicted animals, particularly tigers. Born in 1918 in Tianjin, China, Liu studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tianjin, where he learned traditional Chinese painting and Western techniques. The artist died in 1983 in Tianjin, China.
