古代文人雅士或贵族妇女，在读书写字、弹琴抚筝、品茗弈棋的时候，喜欢焚一炉香，用以增添风雅的意趣，同时又可以净化室内的空气。而且会根据不同季节和环境，焚烧不同的香，如夏秋时节，多焚天然木香；冬春之际，则烧用香料粉末加上其他材料制成的炼香。为了不使香的精油挥发，香气走散，于是就有了专门用于盛香的小型容器，称之为香盒。 此件盖盒银质，色泽稳重，精光内蕴。捶击呈圆形，子母口相合。香盒盖面与盒底均饰以卷草纹，鑋刻细致，精巧玲珑，华丽尽显，线条细腻精美，工艺精湛。
