Verso on the stretcher label "Villa Ducale die Stresa / 1890 / N." with the handwritten addition "1841". Friedrich Paul was the son of Friedrich Nerly, whose artistic talent he obviously inherited. He moved to Rome in around 1868, to which the handwritten label on the reverse of our painting refers. From there he undertook numerous trips to southern Italy, including Sicily. This painting shows Monte Pellegrino on the north coast of Sicily, not far from Palermo, which has been an important place of pilgrimage since the 17th century. Friedrich Paul war der Sohn von Friedrich Nerly, dessen künstlerisches Talent er augenscheinlich geerbt hatte. Um 1868 übersiedelte er nach Rom, worauf sich der handschriftliche Klebezettel auf der Rückseite unseres Gemäldes bezieht. Von dort unternahm er zahlreiche Reisen nach Süditalien, u.a. nach Sizilien. Das vorliegende Gemälde zeigt den Monte Pellegrino an der Nordküste Siziliens, unweit von Palermo, der seit dem 17. Jahrhundert ein bedeutender Wallfahrtsort war. Goethe beschrieb ihn als „das schönste Vorgebirge der Welt“.
