自明末始，引不同材质的精巧雅物，置于文房案头，在文人雅士间蔚然成风。其审美意趣以质朴天然为尚，竹节、松根皆可用于其中，如沈春泽所谓“挹古今清华美妙之气于耳目之前，供我呼吸；罗天地琐杂碎细之物于几席之上，听我指挥。”
此品即属一例，用一段竹根，因材随势而就，仿作老松虬干，枝叶攀附左右，其上浅刻松鳞棋布，浮雕松针栉比，尤有浑然天成之趣。此类仿作松桩的竹根雕刻花插，于明末清初颇为流行，此品则属其中尤有稚拙之趣者，置于案头实属雅设。
