A FAMILLE-ROSE ENAMELED ‘CELESTIAL EYE GOLDFISH’ SGRAFFIATO DISH, REPUBLIC PERIOD
China, 1912-1949. The shallow rounded sides supported on a short foot and rising to a gently everted gilt rim. Finely painted in pink, blue and green enamels, as well as in iron red, with eleven goldfish to the interior and exterior playfully swimming against the neatly incised ‘sgraffiato’ wave ground.


Provenance:
Old New York private collection. Label to base inscribed: “Chia Ching, 1796-1820” and numbered “13208”.

Condition:
Very good condition with only minor wear and firing irregularities, and few tiny nicks to the foot.

The recessed base with an apocryphal iron-red six-character seal mark da Qing Jiaqing nianzhi against a turquoise ground.


Celestial Eye or Choutengan
is a breed of goldfish that has a defining pair of telescope eyes which are turned upwards, pupils gazing animatedly about. Celestial eye goldfish were a popular motif during the Qing dynasty.

民國粉彩金魚暗紋盤
