A GILT COPPER REPOUSSÉ FIGURE OF TARA, NEPAL, 18TH-19TH CENTURY
Finely modeled seated in rajalilasana over a double lotus base with beaded edges, her right hand in varada mudra and her left held in the gesture of elucidation supporting a lotus stalk, wearing an incised diaphanous dhoti secured with a jeweled belt, and adorned with jewelry, her serene face flanked by long earlobes with large lotus blossom earrings, her hair pulled back with a tiara and tied into a high double chignon.
Provenance:
From the personal collection of Prince Joseph Clemens of Bavaria, thence by descent within the family. The back inscribed with an old inventory number, ’89’. A copy of an expertise, dated November 1990, confirming the dating above (while leaving the geographical attribution more open, including also the possibility of Tibet or Mongolia), and noting the figure is unusual in its design and form, accompanies this lot. Prince Joseph Clemens of Bavaria (1902-1990) was a member of the Bavarian Royal House of Wittelsbach. He was the first and only son of Prince Alfons of Bavaria and his wife Princess Louise Victoire d' Orléans-Alençon. The prince studied art history and later became one of the leading art historians in Europe.
Condition:
Good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities. Some nicks here and there, light scratches, small tears to the back, minor losses, slightly bent and leaning. Overall with a solid, naturally grown patina. The base retaining its original sealing plate with a neatly incised double vajra symbol.
