金綠玉系列中，有著兩種在寶石界中極為特殊的光學性質，變色（Color Change）及貓眼效應（Cat Eye）．代表性寶石分別為亞歷山大變石（Alexandrite）及貓眼石（Cat-Eye），產於巴西並且非常少見，據說由於在俄皇亞歷山大生日那天被發現，變石因而被冠上亞歷山大之名，變石所呈現的綠色和紫紅色剛好是俄國皇家的代表色，所以被認為象徵了俄國的精神，由於其礦源在近來已幾近耗竭，因此，質優的變石價格極高，是與剛玉系列比肩的貴重寶石。
