雍正皇帝对铸钱格外重视，史载“康熙政尚宽仁，雍正继以严猛”，对自康熙后期起就遗留下来的诸多弊政进行了大刀阔斧的改革。铸钱上也不例外。雍正年间，朝廷对铸钱控制极严，民间私铸极少，在执政初年有民间铸钱，形体较小、铜中夹铅。针对这一弊端，雍正皇帝责令将铸钱者均被处极刑，私铸遂绝 。这也使得我们现在看到的雍正通宝大多做工精美，整齐划一，而轻小薄劣钱少见的原因。
