小叶紫檀因深得明清两代皇族推崇，明代采伐殆尽，清时尚未复生，来源沽竭。又紫檀木生长缓慢，非数百年不能成材，极为珍贵。此件笔筒为小叶紫檀整挖而成，成材木料硕大，牛毛纹显而易见，表面深厚润泽，质朴卓雅。整器线条清雅简约，是文房陈设之佳器。
