中原山西彩绘金毛犼为观音菩萨坐骑，《封神演义》中攻打万仙阵的时候，阐教五龙山云霄洞文殊广法天尊（即文殊菩萨}）收了截教的虬首仙为坐骑，即青毛狮，阐教九宫山白鹤洞普贤真人（即普贤菩萨），收了截教的灵牙仙为坐骑，即白象，而阐教普陀山落伽洞慈航道人，收了截教的金光仙为坐骑，即金毛犼，慈航道人便是观音菩萨。此坐骑金毛犼双目圆睁，双耳下搭，回首昂望作吼叫状，腿足粗壮有力，牢牢扒住地面，眼、口、鼻、爪处雕刻一丝不苟，极富生命状态，造型栩栩如生。金毛犼全身皆饰彩绘，更显其精美，雕刻工艺精湛，保存完好，十分难得。
