In the front a young woman sitting on the floor is playing cards with two soldiers. She draws her card confidently and with verve. Behind her an officer is sitting on his horse with a pipe in hand, another officer has already dismounted from his white horse, which is held by the reins by a boy to the left of the picture, and is hugging a woman. There are secondary scenes at the corners of the picture: on the far right, a roast is being prepared over the fire and on the left is a woman sitting with her child. In the background on the left the view goes into the distance to further tents. The sky shows the light of the early evening.The beautiful, color-coordinated composition is clearly influenced by Nicolaes Berchem's lively style, but shows a different brush font.
