Carl Borromäus Andreas Ruthart (1630–1703) – circle, Pair of Animal Paintings.Ruthart learned from Daniel Schulz in Danzig and then moved through Central Europe to Venice, Rome, Antwerp, Regensburg, and Vienna, where he worked for Karl Eusebius von Liechtenstein. In 1672 he entered the Cölestiner order in Rome and then lived in a monastery in L’Aquila. In Antwerp, he was a member of the Guild of St. Luke in 1663/1664 and was able to study the works of the great masters of the animal image there (Frans Snijders, Jan Fijt). He specialized in animal representations, especially of attacking predators and hunting images with very dynamic groups of animals, which enjoyed great popularity. Wild rock landscapes usually serve as the backdrop for animal fights. The two pictures presented here are painted quickly with visible, sketchy brushstrokes and could serve as sketches for large-format pictures.Fight of a Bison against a LeopardA leopard ambushed a bison, which was able to shake off the attacker's back. The big cat falls upside down in front of the bison and gets into the dangerous vicinity of its horns. The artist left the outcome of the fight open, the viewer can continue it in his imagination.Wolves Attack a MooseTwo wolves attacked a moose and there is no doubt about the outcome of the fight. One wolf has grabbed the moose by the neck with its teeth, the other is about to bite its throat. Oil on canvas 67 x 82 cm
