After Sir Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577-1640) Christ giving the keys to St Peter inscribed 'MCCCXIV' l.r., oil on panel, with wax seal verso 37 x 30cm The present painting is likely to have been copied from the engraving by Pieter de Jode (Flemish, 1570-1634). Rubens' original composition is in the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. Condition report: Oil on a wooden oak panel. The panel is formed from three boards in horizontal alignment. Original tool marks and bevels are present on the reverse. The upper join has been reglued and animal glue is evident on the reverse. The lower join has movement at either end with associated paint loss. The panel has a slight vertical curvature, it is poorly held in the frame with bent nails at all four sides, probably restricting movement. The paint layer is a in a stable condition. In the figure of Christ there are two circular indentations in the paint layer. Retouching appears to be confined to the panel joins and small areas at the edges of the panel. The painting has a thick, uneven varnish layer which has discoloured. There are scuffs and abrasion to the varnish and a layer of surface dirt present.
