This view of a town by a river once belonged to the important collector and art historian Jules Lenglart (1824-1901) from Lille. At the time of his ownership, it was attributed to Jan van Goyen and was included as a work by this artist in Hofstede de Groot's “Verzeichnis der Werke der hervorragendsten holländischen Maler des XVII Jahrhunderts”. However, it was later attributed to the Leiden based landscape painter Maerten Fransz. van der Hulst by Hans-Ulrich Beck.
