Description
Translation provided by Youdao
This high relief presumably derives from a series depicting the Passion of Christ. It shows Jesus facing left carrying the Cross as he is pulled forwards on a rope by a soldier with a cloth slung around his hips. The man depicted between the two figures could be interpreted as Saint John. Despite the fragmentary nature of the piece, it remains recognisable as a fine quality and characteristic example of the kind of works produced in the English workshops of the early 15th century. Dimensions 31.5 x 20 x 4.5 cm Artist or Maker Nottingham early 15th century Medium Partially freestanding, the reverse flattened, with minimal remains of former polychromy Condition Report Losses to the upper and left edges. The tip of the cross and the diagonal beam lost. The freestanding right leg of the soldier with two cracks in the thigh and above the ankle. Wear throughout. Literature Exhib. cat.: Tentoonstelling van Engels en Mechels Albasten beeldhouwwerk, ed. by Gh.
