Description
Translation provided by Youdao
Depictions of two angels standing in contrapposto on plinths facing slightly towards each other, designed as a pair. The fine quality of their carving is particularly evident in the fine depiction of the curls and the richly varied drapery of their floor-length girded robes. The attributes originally held in the figures' hands are now missing, but it is probable that they once formed part of a scene of the Lamentation of Christ. Dimensions Height of each 74 cm Artist or Maker Probably Alp Region 2nd half 15th century Medium Swiss pine carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse deeply hollowed out. With newer polychromy, the pigment presumably applied over the original grounding on the robes Condition Report Minor wear. The hands replaced. Provenance South German private collection.
