天球瓶以器腹圆鼓近似天球而得名。首见于明朝初期，是时正逢穆斯林太监郑和带领船队下西洋之航海时代，天球瓶可能取自中东回教铜器或者料器造型。天球瓶盛行于乾隆一朝，可见各式釉彩，纹饰，如九桃瓶，喜鹊登梅瓶等等。后朝一直到民国时期都有依照乾隆朝天球瓶纹样而仿烧的品种。 瓶上喜鹊或独立枝头，翘首回盼；或于空中飞舞；梅花盛开，灵芝相伴，清雅之景跃于眼帘。梅花开于冬春相交之际，喜鹊立于梅花枝上，寓意冬去春来，又寓意“喜上梅（楣）梢”，即有喜事临门之意。
