A SAFAVID STYLE INDIAN PAINTING OF A BATTLE SCENE
India, late 19th - early 20th century. Ink, gouache, and gold on wasli. Depicting riders on horseback confronting one another in battle from opposite riverbanks, wielding bows and arrows. The backdrop with a scene showing a gathering of men praying, against a rocky landscape and within a floral frame in cream, blue and green colors interspersed with cut-out medallions decorated with similar motifs on a dark blue ground.
Provenance: Collection of Sigfred Taubert, thence by descent. Sigfred Taubert (1914-2008) was the director of the Frankfurt Book Fair between 1958 and 1973, and also a writer and enthusiastic collector of bibliophilic treasures from all over the world. From 1974 to 1978, he was a member of the board of the UNESCO International Book Committee in Paris.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, soiling, minuscule tears to edges, very few minor touchups.
