明代和清代中前期，宫中常用贵重木材制成笔筒、笔插、笔搁、如意、瓶等，工艺精细，与犀角制作相同。此件迦楠杯选用一段沉香木雕琢而成，审其形制，与同时期之犀角杯，无论流行题材还是雕刻技法均极为相似，为仿角杯作品中的杰出典范。此杯上敞下敛，杯腹内收，口沿及底足呈不规则椭圆形，仰马蹄状造型。杯外壁雕山岩凹凸嶙峋，并以浮雕及镂雕技法刻画老树数枝，苍松如轮。枝干遒劲有力，旁逸斜出，巨石奇峻，气势不凡。刀法深浅有致，沉稳细腻，巧妙结合沉香木质本身之纹理枝节，以浮雕的手法表现出松下高士图，古松苍莽挺拔，松针如扇，松针浮雕精细入微，高度立体，布局和谐得当，设计制作精巧，刀法流畅，匠心独运。
