Delightful 17/18thC Northern Burmese Buddha from a tribal group I do not know the name of. I have heard type people refer to it as the Ngao people, but I do not know the correct designation for this tribal group. I know that their Buddhas are few and far between. Most of the ones of high quality I have seen have been cast in bronze. This one is carved out of a solid piece of teak, except of course for the finial on the top of the head. condition is outstanding, as you can see from the photos. please ask if you have any questions. The only reason it has lasted in this condition is that it is made of solid teak, which is one of the few kinds of wood that resists the elements in that part of the world. note the quality of the carving, with the Finesse shown in the expressiveness of the face. this type is often stiff in both expression and posture. Original black lacquer and remains of the original gilding. Overall patina is superb. This one shows a kind of ease in its body that is rare for a Burmese Buddha of any kind.
