唐时，人们品的主要是饼茶，在品茶前先得将茶饼碾成细末，方可煎茶，否则很难将茶汁煎出来。茶碾的作用，就是将饼茶碾成细末，所以，它是煎茶用的一种器具。唐代诗人元稹《茶》诗曰：“茶。香味，嫩芽。慕诗客，爱僧家。碾雕白玉，罗织红纱。铫煎黄蕊色，碗转曲尘花。夜后邀陪明月，晨前命对朝霞。洗尽古今人不倦，将至醉后岂堪夸。”诗中在谈到煎茶时，用白玉雕琢的碾把饼茶碾成末，用红纱茶罗过筛，再入茶铫煎茶，注入茶碗，茶汤泛起黄花“饽沫”，终成清香美茶。 此件钧窑茶碾，施钧釉，由碾盘，碾具两部分组合而成。碾槽整体呈盘形，下有足以作固定，中间漏胎刻网格纹，以便于使用，碾轴呈瓶形，底部亦未施釉，显得小巧别致。
