A late 15th century Brussels carved wood relief of the Deposition from the Cross Carved three-quarters in the round, partially pierced and freestanding, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy. Finely carved high relief depiction of the Deposition from the Cross with Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea removing the body, the Virgin Mary, Saint John and Mary Magdalene in the foreground and two further mourning women in the background. The sides are flattened in the lower sections, indicating that the relief originally formed part of a multi-panelled altarpiece. It bears the hammer assay mark of the city of Brussels on the reverse. Parts of Mary Magdalene`s left arm missing. Wear throughout. Losses due to insect damage, especially to the plinth. 48 x 32 x 15 cm. Brüssel Ende 15. Jahrhundert, Kreuzabnahme Holz, dreiviertelrund, teilweise durchbrochen und freiplastisch geschnitzt, auf der Rückseite abgeflacht. Geringfügige Reste einer ehemaligen farbigen Fassung. Das qualitätvolle tiefgestaffelte Relief zeigt die Kreuzabnahme Christi durch Nikodemus und Joseph von Arimathäa. Im Vordergrund sind die Gottesmutter Maria und Johannes sowie Maria Magdalena dargestellt, im Hintergrund sind zudem zwei weitere trauernde Frauen wiedergegeben. Das Relief mit im unteren Bereich abgeflachten Seiten dürfte ehemals Bestandteil eines Retabels gewesen sein und trägt auf seiner Rückseite mit einem Hammer die Beschaumarke der Stadt Brüssel. Linker Arm der Magdalena vorn rechts verloren. Weitere Bestoßungen. Verluste durch Wurmfraß besonders an der Plinthe. 48 x 32 x 15 cm.
