A SMALL PYU ROCK CRYSTAL 'ELEPHANT' TALISMAN Burma/ Myanmar, Pyu city states (200-1000 CE). The translucent stone of good clarity with some natural inclusions, carved as an elephant with a short and lowered trunk. Large piercing through the mouth and tail allowing for suspension as a pendant. The holes show ancient toolmarks and are handmade, irregular, funnel-shaped, the use of an iron needle is apparent due to the transparency of the stone, the holes having been made from both sides. Condition: Good condition with minor traces of age and wear. Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik Istvan Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. Istvan Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
