English School, 19th century Portrait of Sir Henry Crofton Lowther (1858-1939), aged five, half length, in black costume with a red sash oil on canvas, painted oval 54 x 43.5cm Sir Henry Crowther was a British diplomat and Ambassador to Chile and Denmark. Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas is in plane with good tension and the paint layers are in a good condition. Retouching in the figures face and outfit is carefully applied and mainly following cracks. In the background the overpaint appears slightly more brushy in handling but the extent of this is difficult to determine. The varnish layer has a smeary appearance which is slightly blanched and opaque in the background.
