The present watercolours may have been painted during Ender's stay in Italy between 1820 and 1822. Provenance: A London private collection. Thomas Ender (1793-1875) was an Austrian landscape painter and watercolourist. He enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, and studied under Laurenz Janscha and later under Joseph Mossmer. Ender was awarded the Academy’s First Prize in landscape drawing and in 1817 he won the Great Painter’s Prize. He spent several years painting in Italy and in 1828 was made Court Painter to Archduke Johann (1782-1859). Condition report: View of the Palazzo Ducale, Florence Glued around the edges onto a border of paper. A horizontal crease running across the page approx 5mm from the lower edge, resulting in a little paint loss on the red dress of the lady to the right. Some light spots of foxing. Some light brown staining in the top half. A very faint pale line running horizontally across the sheet level with the top of the tower, and another level with the carts. A little light surface dirt. A small tear to the black border at the top edge and a few down the right hand side, although these do not spill into the main image. A very slight wave at lower edge. Numbered 46 on mount The Ponte Vecchio, Florence Glued around the edges onto a border of paper. A faint crease running around the edge of the sheet, approx 5mm from the edge. A few small spots of foxing. Some light yellowing and discolouration throughout. There is a very small light indent upper right near the edge, and two adjacent to the left edge. Numbered 49 on mount Looking through an arch into the Palazzo Ducale, Florence Glued around the edges onto a border of paper. Some yellowing and discolouration throughout, along with some flecks of foxing. A large spot of foxing lower right. A light crease running down the right edge, and another light crease close to top edge, both approx 5mm from the edges. A pin hole close to left edge, and possibly another smaller one to the left of the lefthand column. The paper has a very light wave. Numbered 36 on mount The Duomo, Amalfi, with storm clouds above Glued around the edges onto a border of paper. A light crease running around all edges, approx 5mm from the edge. A slight wave to the paper, very slight. Some yellowing and browning throughout. Numbered 34 on mount.
