Description
Translation provided by Youdao
A large-format work depicting the crowned Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon and holding the nude Christ Child with a globe in Her right hand. The fact that the face carved into the crescent moon is only visible from below as well as the elongated proportions of both figures and the composition of the robe which the Virgin wears draped around Her body all indicate that the sculpture was intended to be placed in a high position and viewed from below. Dimensions Height 118 cm Artist or Maker Probably Upper Rhine-Region around 1470/1480 Medium With extensive remains of older polychromy. Condition Report The Virgin's left hand lost. A loss to the seam of the robe in the lower left. Wear throughout. Provenance South German private collection. Notes VAT: Margin scheme
